RIMS observes World Plastic Surgery Day with focus on reconstructive care

The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, today observed World Plastic Surgery Day under the theme "Changing Lives with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery" at the Anaesthesiology Seminar Room, Modular OT Complex.
The programme was organised by the Department of Plastic Surgery, RIMS, with support from the Rotary Club of Imphal.
Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director, RIMS, attended as chief guest, while Prof N Sanjib Singh, Medical Superintendent, RIMS Hospital, presided over the function.
Prof L Rajesh Singh, Dean (Academics), and N Muhindro Singh, president, Rotary Club of Imphal, were guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Sunil Kumar Sharma said plastic surgery goes far beyond cosmetic procedures and plays a vital role in restoring form, function and confidence for patients with bums, trauma, congenital anomalies, cancer and other reconstructive conditions.
He lauded the department for its contributions to patient care, education, research and outreach despite limited manpower.
He stressed the need for innovation, teamwork, patient-centred care, public awareness, timely referrals and ethical practice.
The Director called for operationalizing the Plastic Surgery Modular OT and extending the Government of India's SMILE Project to RIMS.
He also noted that M.Ch Plastic Surgery intake has been increased to three students annually, making the department one of the largest in the North East in the coming years.
As part of the observance, 10 plastic surgery patients were felicitated with mementoes.
Sweets were also distributed to inpatients admitted in the Plastic Surgery wards.
The event highlighted the role of plastic and reconstructive surgery in restoring function, appearance and quality of life, especially for bum survivors, and aimed to raise awareness on bum prevention, timely treatment and rehabilitation.
The programme was attended by the Deputy Director (Admn.), Principals of Dental and Nursing Colleges, Chief Accounts Officer-cum-Financial Advisor, Heads of Departments, faculty, staff and students of RIMS, Imphal.
