142nd birth anniversary of freedom fighter Laikhuram Khagendrajit observed

The 142nd birth anniversary of freedom fighter Laikhuram Khagendrajit was observed by the Khagendrajit Research Committee at Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi, Imphal, on Sunday.
Director of Mutua Museum, Mutua Bahadur, attended as chief guest while former Additional Director of Health Services Dr M Kunjabihari presided over the function.
Dr Sharata Chandra Longzomba, faculty member of Manipuri Department, Dhanamanjuri University, and Dr S Shantibala, Associate Professor of L Sanoi College, attended as resource persons.
The observance began with floral tributes to the portrait of Laikhuram Khagendrajit.
Speaking on the occasion, Mutua Bahadur said Laikhuram Khagendrajit, who was bom on September 13, 1884, was not only a social reformer and visionary leader but also a freedom fighter who played a major role in the struggle for Manipur's independence.
He said Khagendrajit was one of the first political revolutionaries of Manipur who led several movements against British colonial rule.
Khagendrajit opposed unjust taxation and made significant contributions to preserve the language and culture of the State.
He also established the Meitei Mayek High School at Kongba, said Mutua Bahadur.
Stating that Khagendrajit took part in the 47th session of the Indian National Congress at Tripura as part of the movement for Manipur's independence, Mutua Bahadur said the birth anniversary is observed to make the present generation aware of his contributions.
