World Suicide Prevention Day observed

Thoubal, September 12 2026: World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 was observed today at Kurak Lamdaipung community hall in Thoubal Athokpam Makha Leikai.

The observance was held on the theme "Changing the Narrative on Suicide" with the call to action -"Start the Conversation" organised by Khangembam Tomba Memorial Trust, Athokpam Makha Leikai.

Today's observance was held with an aim to raise awareness among the public on suicide prevention, reducing stigma and the relevant preventive measures.

As a part of the programme, MD Psychiatry Dr Pritam Laishram spoke as resource person on the topic "Suicide and its prevention".

A quiz competition on the topic "Suicide & Mental Health" for the students was also conducted.

The attendees also took a suicide prevention pledge.

A Society Theatre, Manipur production play titled 'Wakhal Anigi Wayel' directed by Hemchand Ningthojam was performed during the observance so as to raise awareness on mental health.

Delivering the keynote address, Medical Superintendent, District Hospital Thoubal, Dr Kh Robindro raised concern on the rising suicide case in the State and highlighted the concerted efforts of the family to help those in mental distress preventing them to take extreme steps.

He also mentioned that the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur has become one of the key factors in rising suicide cases.

Notably, Thoubal Municipal Council Ward No 7 Caretaker Councillor Yumnam Premabati Devi; Thoubal Municipal Council former Councillor Yumnam Bimola Devi; Trust President Kh Ramananda, CDAC Wangjing Dr M Suchilkumar and Athokpam Apunba Meira Paibi President Kh Kripa Devi graced as the presidium members of the programme.
