Imphal, April 12 2026:
The All Manipur Students' Union, as part of its 46th Realisation Month observance, organised a State-Level Essay Competition on the topic "Influx of Foreigners in Manipur, Its Impact and the Way Out" at Kha-Manipur College, Kakching.
The event witnessed participation from over 500 students from various institutions across the state.
In a press release, AMSU Information and Publicity Secretary Serto Rengneier Kom stated that as the public demand for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and identification of illegal immigrants grows louder, the Government deferring Census for some time to divert the issue is unacceptable.
He stated that deferring the Census and attempting to divert the issue would not provide a lasting solution.
He cautioned that even if the Census is postponed for five or ten years, failure to implement NRC and take concrete steps to identify and deport illegal immigrants could lead to large-scale public agitation.
Serto further remarked that temporary measures aimed at appeasement should be avoided, warning that such approaches may deepen public dissatisfaction and potentially trigger unrest.
He urged the government to act responsibly and address the issue with sincerity.
He also called upon the people to remain vigilant and united, stressing that safeguarding the state from the impact of unchecked influx is not solely the responsibility of the authorities but also of the citizens.
