Imphal, May 11 2014 : The annual award ceremony of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Imphal was held at the auditorium of JN Manipuri Dance Academy here today.

The ceremony was attended by Governor of Manipur VK Duggal as Chief Guest and President of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad Prof E Dinamani as President.

In all, 24 eminent litterateurs and artistes were presented awards during the occasion, which also marked the 79th foundation day of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor VK Duggal said that an important task for the people of the State is to work towards getting Manipuri the classical language status.

Manipuri Sahitya Parishad is the oldest literature group in the State established in 1935 .

The Parishad has been conferring awards by recognizing talents and contributions besides taking up other significant activities.

The first award for music was handed over as back as in 1937 .

The contribution of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad to Manipuri literature is immense.

Its contribution towards the recognition of Manipuri language as a subject of study at graduate level of Calcutta University in 1948, recognition of Manipuri language by Sahitya Akademi in 1985, inclusion of Manipuri language in the 8th Schedule of Indian Constitution in 1992, etc., are historic achievements of the Parishad, Governor noted.

16 persons who were presented the titular awards by the Governor were Nongthombam Kunjamohon of Uripok Yambem Leikai (Sahityaratna), Aribam Chitreshwar Sharma of Khongman Mangjil (Gabesnabhusan), Naorem Gandhor of Kakching Panji Leikai (Sahityasevak), Raghubir Thiyam of Yairipok Bazar (Kavyabhusan), Rajkumar Sanatomba of Uripok Yambem (Sangeetbhusan-Manohar Sai), Chongtham Kamala of Thangmeiband Lourung Purel (Sangeetratna-Matam Esei), late Birjit Ngangomba of Nagamapal (Natyabhusan-Phampak Lila), Sagolsem Jati of Naoremthong Laishram Leirak (Natyabhusan-Shumang Lila), Leishangthem Babujao of Top Khongnangkhong (Badyabhusan), Kumari Darsana Javeri of Mumbai (Nrityaratna-Ras), Akham Ongbi Lakshmi of Yaiskul Janmasthan (Nrityaratna-Ras), Nameirakpam Hemolata of Chingmeirong (Nrityabhusan-Lok Nritya),Ningthoujam Babu of Seijang (Kakabhusan-Wari Liba), Saikhom Nodiya of Wakha (Kalabhusan-Thang Ta), Laishram Saratkumar of Moirangkhom (Shilpbhusan) and Aribam Akanta (Kalabhusan-painting/sculpture) .

The cash awardees were Haobam Nganbi of Uripok (Guru Maisnam Amubi Award), Ningthoujam Shyamchand of Yaiskul Janmasthan (Keisham Manikchand Award), Maibam Tomba of Keishamthong (Kamalasana Rajkumari Memorial Award) and Gurumayuam Bagendra Sharma of Uripok (Thokchom Ongbi Manimacha Memorial Award) .

Hueiyen Lanpao's columnist Prof Jodhachandra Sanasam was presented Dr Kamal Memorial Kabiratna Cash Award for his novel "Leisat Tamle Nangidamak" .

Ashangbam Minaketan Award to Prof Polem Nabachandra's "Saktam Amasung Mami", Telem Abir Cash Award to Sanabam Thaninleima's play "Rickshaw Amasung Nongmei" and Dr Jamini Literature Prize to BM Maisnam's novel "Shrimati Kumari Devdasi" were also presented by the Governor during the award ceremony.
