Commandos pick up three workers of independent candidate

Imphal, February 11, 2011: Three workers of the independent candidate to the Konthoujam bye-election have been arrested by the police commandos as the election campaign reach its peak with the countdown to the end of the campaign begins.

The campaign for the February 14 bye-election will come to end by 4 pm tomorrow (Saturday).

Three candidates, Dr S Ranjan of Congress, K Sarat of Trinamool Congress and independent candidate, K Ranjit are in the fray.

Police commandos have alleged picked up three workers the independent candidate, Kolom Bupen (31) son of Mani, K Ibiton Singh (32) son of Yaima, both from Khumbong Bazar and Tongbram Mitkhu (32) son of Noren from Khumbong Mamang Leikai from their respective houses this early morning around 4.30 am.

The commandos alleged them of distributing bullets to the Congress workers, workers of Ranjit alleged adding they also warned of rounding up some persons.

Owing to the threats workers were unable to stay in their houses, they informed.

Asked about the alleged charge, candidate Ranjit said he and his workers have no gun.

It was a part of the game plan of his rival candidate who could not remain silent, more and more people are coming towards him.

Earlier also there were instances of threatening to his workers, he added.

Ranjit went on to say that his candidature is not outlaw one.

He has no remark of connection with outlaw organisations.

He is in the fray with full faith to democracy and Indian Constitution.

During the rally also he never talks against Congress except expressing dissatisfaction on the service of the earlier MLAs to the people.

Meanwhile, with the preparation for the election completed, polling personnel will start dispatching in their respective polling station from 10 am on Sunday.

Adequate security arrangement has also been made, the RO of the Konthoujam A/C said today.
