Oriental College gets 5-year extension of autonomy; inks MoU with MTIF

Oriental College (Autonomous), Takyelpat, Imphal West, has received an extension of its autonomous status from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for five years, from 2023-24to 2027-28 .
The extension was approved by the UGC in its meeting held on July 6, 2026, on the recommendation of the Standing Committee on Autonomous Colleges.
The Commission has also condoned the gap period from 2023 to 2026 on an expost facto basis.
The College had applied for the extension through the UGC Autonomous College Portal on January 26, 2024.The approval holds significance as Oriental College is the first autonomous college in Manipur and also the first college in the State to receive an extension of autonomous status from the UGC.
Established in 1963, the College has completed three cycles of NAAC accreditation.
In the latest Cycle-III assessment, it was awarded CGPA 2.21 with Grade B, valid from January 2025 to January 2030.The continuation of autonomy will enable the College to further strengthen its academic programmes, curriculum, examination system and institutional practices in line with UGC Regulations and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.On September 10, the College signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ManipurTech Innovation Foundation (MTIF), Imphal.
MTIF is a not-for-profit organisation supported by the Department of Information Technology, Government of Manipur, with implementation support from KIIT Technology Business Incubator (KIIT-TBI) .
The MoU aims to foster cooperation in student and faculty engagement, internships, mentoring, workshops, seminars, hackathons, research, innovation, startup development and awareness on intellectual property and funding opportunities.
The MoU was signed by Dr S Ranjit Singh, Principal, and Kongkham Biplob Singha, IQAC Coordinator, on behalf of Oriental College, and by Dr Rajiv Kangabam, Lead, MTIF, and Velloree Khuraijam, Technical Associate, MTIF, on behalf of MTIF.
The College stated that the two developments will help strengthen its academic pursuits while creating more opportunities for students and faculty in innovation and entrepreneurship.
