Outrage over killing of Chongtham Vikram in Delhi, groups demand justice

Imphal, September 09 2026: Outrage and condemnation continue to pour in over the killing of renowned Manipuri guitarist and music teacher Chongtham Vikram (54) in South Delhi.

Vikram, son of noted singer Chongtham Kamala Devi of Thangmeiband Lourungpurel Leikai, was allegedly attacked by a group of around eight persons in front of his house at Kilokari village on the morning of September 7 .

According to reports, the musician had objected to some intoxicated persons creating nuisance near his residence, after which he was kicked and beaten with sticks.

He was rushed to nearby Holy Family Hospital but succumbed to injuries.

Reacting strongly, All Manipur Nupi Marup condemned the mob lynching and demanded immediate registration of an FIR and stringent punishment for those involved under the law.

The women's body said the incident is not an isolated one and pointed to a series of racial discrimination, harassment and violence faced by people from the North East Region in the National Capital.

It said numerous cases of harassment, abuse and exploitation of Meitei and tribal girls who are studying or selfemployed in and around New Delhi have been reported.

To prevent such incidents, the textbooks of Social Science from Class V to X published by NCERT should include a special and distinct chapter on the North East Region, it added.

Manipur State Council - All India Youth Federation (AIYF) and Manipur State Council - All India Students Federation (AISF) also condemned the killing, stating that it shows how Indians treat people from the North East with contempt.

The two organisations demanded capital punishment for the culprits and Rs 1 crore compensation to the bereaved family to be recovered from the accused.

They also condemned the rising incidents of lynching in Delhi under the NDA Government, recalling that Chanam Pravish of Uripok Achom Leikai was also killed in Delhi a few years ago without justice.

Film Forum Manipur expressed deep shock and grief over the tragic incident and shared the sorrow of the bereaved family.

It urged authorities to bring out the truth at the earliest.

The incident has drawn strong condemnation from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju and Union Minister for DoNER Jyotiraditya Scindia, raising hopes for prompt action and justice, said sources.

Groups have urged the Government of India and Delhi Police to ensure safety of North East people and take up concrete measures for their protection as Indian citizens.
