Imphal, August 05 2025:
The Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM) has urged the Government to appoint a new experienced tribal officer with no political affiliations as the Chairperson of the Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST).
Addressing the media at Manipur Press Club today, TYCM vice president Thangmeingam Awungshi said that MSCST was established on March 25, 2014 to protect the rights of Scheduled Tribes under the Manipur State Commission for the Scheduled Tribes Act, 2014 .
Saying that the Commission has been functioning inefficiently since the retirement of its former Chairperson after a three year tenure, he urged the Government to issue a notification to appoint a new Chairperson from among experienced tribal officers.
He noted that MSCST is a quasi-judicial Commission whose Chairperson and members are not elected.
MSCST would become ineffective and unable to function independently if its Chairperson and members are politically influenced, Thangmeingam said and added that the Chairperson of the Commission should be appointed through a transparent process, involving open notification, submission of biodata, activity reports, and experience.
TYCM will pursue legal action if it detects any political involvement in the appointment of the MSCST Chairperson, he warned.
