Imphal, September 04 2026:
The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has announced a one-day strike on September 11, a three-day strike on September 28-30 and an indefinite strike from October 26 to press for implementation of five-day banking.
In a statement, S Sanahal Sharma, Convenor of UFBU and Secretary of AIBOC Manipur State Unit, shared an article by Thomas Franco, former General Secretary of AIBOC, titled "Five-Day Banking: An Inevitable and Overdue Reform".
The article traced the demand to years of recruitment ban, VRS after the Narasimham Committee recommendations, and increased workload leading to stress.
While the Central Government switched to a five-day week on June 3, 1985, and RBI, many PSUs and IT sector followed, banks remained on six-day week.
During the 10th Bipartite Settlement effective from Nov 1, 2012, UFBU raised the demand.
On May 25, 2015, after tough negotiations attended by SBI Chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya, two Saturdays off was agreed with oral assurance of a full five-day week later.
The 12th Bipartite Settlement signed on March 8, 2024, agreed to a five-day week with 40 minutes extra work daily.
However, more than two years later it is yet to be implemented despite the Finance Ministry recommending it to PMO, prompting the strike call.
