AMSU observes 61st foundation day

Imphal, August 28 2026: The All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) observed its 61st foundation day in Imphal today.

Addressing the gathering, AMSU president Bruce Pebam condemned the killing of four Naga civilians in an ambush along the Imphal-Tamei Road in Kangpokpi district yesterday.

Taking strong exception to the repeated incidents of violence in the State, he said that the Government of India could not deny its role in the ongoing crisis in Manipur.

Bruce charged that the GoI has been treating Manipur like a colonial subject.

He said AMSU was formed on August 28, 1965, a day after the Chaklam Khongchat protest against the artificial food shortage in Manipur.

AMSU, however, has not limited its activities to the education sector alone, as Manipur remains a conflict-affected State, he added.

Saying that social issues have a serious impact on education, Bruce added that AMSU has been at the forefront to address such issues.

He added that AMSU's 61-year journey is a testament to its efforts to uphold the rights to education and life.

Further stating that Manipur is currently facing several chronic issues, he claimed that neither the Centre nor the State Government had put any sincere effort to prevent violence in the small State.

He condemned the ambush carried out by "Kuki militants" along the Imphal-Tamei Road yesterday that killed four Naga civilians.

Claiming that the Government of India (GoI) has been waging a war in Manipur using mercenaries, he said the GoI could not deny its role in the crisis in the State.

He also alleged that the GoI has been pursuing a "divide-and-rule policy to disintegrate Manipur.

Bruce said Manipur would not be able to return to normalcy unless all communities work together towards the idea of a united Manipur.

Right to life remains unguaranteed in Manipur despite India having been independent for over 70 years, he said.

The programme was also attended by Khongnangthaba University Vice Chancellor Prof N Joykumar, social scientist Dr Dhanabir Laishram, DM University Registrar Dr RK Joteen, Assistant Prof Dr Kangujam Sanatomba Meitei (Political Science Department, Manipur University) and AMSU advisor Peter Laishram also attended the programme.

As part of the observance, a blood donation camp was held.
