Guwahati, August 08:
The North East Students' Organisation (NESO) today said it will take up the issue of repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) at appropriate international forum.
NESO Chairman Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya said in a release the "draconian act" must be repealed as there cannot be a military solution to the problems of insurgency in the North East.
He said the Centre must accede and honour the United Nations Covenant for guarantee of human rights and insisted on exemplary punishment for the killers of Thangjam Manorama of Manipur.
"The Act is responsible for the untold misery like death, rape and torture, apart from denial of rights to the people of North East and violation of human rights has taken place due to the policy of military intervention in political matters", he said.
The student leader said any amendment in the Act was not acceptable to them and "we will not settle for nothing less than the withdrawal of these Acts".
