Senapati, November 03 2016:
The United Naga Council (UNC) has demanded that the Government honour the several Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) signed between the Nagas and the Government pertaining to the Sadar Hills issue in "letter and spirit" .
According to the UNC, the first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) pertaining to the Sadar Hills issue was signed on December 14, 1981 between the Nagas and the Government.
On November 10, 1992, another MoU on the issue was signed between the two parties.
Two more signing of MoUs followedSeptember 27, 1996 and June 23, 1998. The UNC then said that on November 24, 2011, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) gave a written assurance to the Nagas on the issue.
The UNC then sought the intervention of the Central Government saying "unwanted situation" may crop up if the Government chooses to remain mute.
The UNC further said it had petitioned the Union Home Minister and the Prime Minister on the development today.
The UNC said that it will intensify its ongoing agitationand warned that attempts from any quarter to contain the UNC volunteers enforcing the blockade will prove 'catastrophic' .
"If the Government of Manipur attempts to deploy its security forces to contain us, we are all ready to face them," UNC president Gaidon Kamei informed Newmai News Network this evening over phone.
The UNC president then appealed to all the Nagas including frontal organisations to stand united in this "hour of urgency.
"It is the obligation of every Naga people to protect and defend our ancestral land, people, identity, history, tradition, culture, custom and time honored-institutions at all cost.
We are the owner of our land and we will never allow anyone to decide for the Nagas.
We strongly oppose the proposed upgradation of the so called Sadar Hills and Jiribam sub division into full fledged districts," the UNC reiterated in another statement.
The UNC accused Chief Minister O bobi Singh of "creating trouble" between the Nagas and the Kukis.
"Manipur Assembly election is just round the corner, and so, desperate Ibobi Singh has come up with the vote-bank politics," the UNC stated.
The UNC warned that in the event of any "unwanted situation" Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh "will be held responsible" .
