Man arrested in connection with murder of father; locals protest

Imphal, July 30 2026: Police have arrested an individual identified as Ngangkham Ronaldo in connection with the murder case of his father, Thambou.

Thambou, a resident of Keirao Wangkhem under Irilbung Police Station in Imphal East district, was shot dead by unidentified miscreants at his residence on July 20 at around 2.30 am.

His wife, Keinatombi, also sustained injuries after being stabbed during the attack.

According to reports received from the JAC formed in connection with the killing, Irilbung Police summoned Thambou's wife, Ronaldo and daughter for questioning on July 28 .

While the other two family members were released on the same day, Ronaldo was arrested and subsequently remanded to police custody.

Denouncing the arrest, a sit in protest was staged today at Keirao Wangkhem.

Speaking to the media, Keinatombi, wife of the deceased, questioned whether the police were trying to implicate her son in connection with his father's killing.

JAC convenor Phijam Brojen, on the other hand, said that police had already arrested one Laikhuram Laba from the locality (Keirao Wangkhem) after he was identified by Thambou's wife.

It is unfortunate that the police arrested the deceased's son instead of interrogating Laba and identifying other culprits who facilitated the killing by cutting the power supply and disabling CCTV cameras, he said.

Questioning the grounds on which Ronaldo was arrested, he urged the Government to take responsibility if any untoward incident occurred to Thambou's family.
