Thoubal, March 28 2026:
A one-day youth convention on the burning topic of "Save Manipur: No NRC, No Census" was held today at Wangjing Ningthou Laibung located in Wangjing Wangkhei.
Organised by Youths of Wangjing, the convention was graced by youth leader and Chartered Accountant Chongtham Sanjoy and many elders of Wangjing region, namely, Yumnam Chaoba, Ashangbam Dhananjoy, Soibam Chaoba and Haobam Rajen.
Addressing the gathering, CA Chongtham Sanjoy said conducting the census exercise before updating the National Register of Citizens would be akin to annihilating the indigenous communities of Manipur.
If the illegal immigrants staying in Manipur from neighbouring countries are "legalized", the State will face a slew of additional challenges.
And if the menace of illegal immigration is not tackled now, future generations will rue it just like the 1949 Merger Agreement.
Urging the political party in power to avoid misleading the public, he emphasized the possible loss of assembly seats for the valley if the census and delimitation exercise are carried out before updating the NRC .
There should be no compromise in identifying illegal immigrants before the exercise and conducting the census in the rightful manner.
Until the Internally Displaced Persons are safely rehabilitated and returned to their original homes, the census exercise should not be conducted, added Chongtham Sanjoy.
However, if the Government forcefully goes ahead with the census exercise in contravention with the people's aspiration, Youths of Wangjing will extend its full support to the democratic movement that will be launched by the people and CSOs of Manipur in opposition, said the CA .
