Imphal, June 27 2025:
As part of their continued inspection of vulnerable paddyfields in foothill areas, COCOMI Farmers' Wing visited the farmlands at Yaingangpokpi, Shantikhongban, Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi in Imphal East district today.
The team also met with local farmers and listened to their concerns.
As the team tried to visit the vulnerable paddyfields at Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi, they were stopped by Central Forces stationed there.
After a long negotiation, only a few members of the team were allowed to visit.
In light of the prolonged disruption of agricultural activities in this region, L Budhachandra, a farmer, said that farmers have been unable to cultivate their paddy to maturity across farmlands located close to Kuki villages for more than 2 years since the eruption of violence on May 3, 2023."However, with enhanced protection provided by security forces, we might be able to increase paddy cultivation in comparison to the previous year", he added.
He appealed for arrangement of more security measures to allow the farmers to cultivate their paddy to maturity.
If this is delayed, the entire harvest will be lost, he warned.
Seeking increased Governmental focus on the matter, he also lauded COCOMI Farmers' Wing for providing farmers with access to paddy seeds and other agricultural items.
