Imphal, July 25 2026: Leaders representing various indigenous communities from different parts of the State have unanimously resolved to constitute the Ching-Tam Apunba Environmental Protection Committee (CTAEPC), New Keithelmanbi Area, in view of the escalating environmental crisis in Manipur.

CTAEPC in a release said that the decision was taken during a meeting held at Namching Maha Kabui, New Keithelmanbi, on Friday.

The newly formed committee has been mandated to monitor and address continuing environmental degradation affecting the region and check and halt the transportation of forest products and quarrying materials through New Keithelmanbi and along NH-37.The meeting also expressed solidarity with the ongoing understanding and joint efforts of COCOMI and UNC to restore peace and secure justice for victims of the conflict that began on May 3, 2023, It deliberated extensively on the role of civil society organisations in fostering peace and restoring normalcy in the State.

The gathering observed that elements allegedly involved in illegal activities, including narco-related networks and unlawful immigration, have repeatedly disrupted peaceful coexistence among the State's communities by instigating communal tensions and unrest.

The meeting further discussed the importance of securing the endorsement of apex bodies for an inter-district economic blockade as a measure to address prevailing issues confronting the State, including urgent environmental concerns posing a serious threat to its ecological and social well-being.

The participants reaffirmed their collective commitment to safeguarding the environment, promoting peace and protecting the interests and future of all indigenous communities in the State.
