Imphal, October 14 2025:
World Mental Health Day was observed today at TG Higher Secondary School on the theme, "Access to Services-Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies" .
The event was jointly organised by the National Mental Health Programme, District Mental Health Programme and District Health Society, Imphal West.
It was attended by Dr Phami Golmei, Medical Officer; Dr Mary Haobam, District Nodal Officer, District Mental Health programme, Imphal West; and M Sunita, Senior Lecturer, TG Higher Secondary School among others.
At the event, speakers informed that World Mental Health Day is celebrated every year on October 10 to raise awareness of mental health issues and mobilize efforts to support mental well-being.
They shared that mental health issues in Manipur have significantly increased due to the combined trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing ethnic conflict that began in May 2023 .
They asserted that the dual crises have left many, especially youth, women, and children, facing severe psychological distress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression.
They also emphasized the need for organising awareness programmes on mental health to help reduce stigma, encourage people to seek help early, and promote a better understanding of mental well-being.
