AIM hosts 'Pung Solo' workshop, 'Chali Pareng' staged at Khurai

Imphal, September 07 2026: Academy of Indigenous Music (AIM) organised a workshop cum production on 'Pung Solo' at its auditorium at Bammon Kampu under the sponsorship of Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi.

Retired senior guru of JN Manipur Dance Academy Konsam Kumar attended as chief guest and renowned music director Gotimayum Surchandra as president.

Speaking on the occasion, Konsam Kumar said while people generally see Duhaar Cholom and Pung Cholom in Manipur Nata Sankirtana, solo performances have now emerged to showcase individual talents.

Group performances often cannot bring out full talent, while solo provides opportunity, he said, terming it a good step.

He said Sankirtana was codified by old gurus with strict codes, but with changing tastes of audiences, many changes are seen.

Even if changes come with time, its core values and disciplines must be preserved.

AIM secretary Irengbam Shyamchand said the workshop was organised to provide a platform for artistes with different talents to showcase their skills without diluting Sankirtana traditions.

The event concluded with Pung Solo performances.

Meanwhile, Centre for Social and Cultural Development Manipur, Singjamei Oinam Thingel organised a workshop cum production of "Chali Pareng" at Multipurpose Community Hall, Khurai under the CMAT Scheme of Art &Culture Department, Government of Manipur.

Sangeet Natak Akademi awardee Phanjoubam Iboton Singh, Manipur State Kala Akademi awardee Loitongbam Brajamohon and Lecturer, Kasom Khullen Hr Sec School Golmei Kumar Rongmei attended as presidium members.

At the event, Iboton Singh lauded the Art and Culture Department for supporting art organisations through CMAT to conduct workshops and produce productions.

He urged groups to utilise the scheme properly, learn from gurus and continuously produce works.

The newly produced Chali Pareng was presented to the public at the end of the programme.
