Condemnations pour in over bomb blast near CLP leader's residence

Kangpokpi/Thoubal, September 04 2026: Condemnation has poured in from different quarters following the bomb blast outside the residence of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and MLA of Wangkhem Assembly Constituency Keisham Meghachandra Singh at Yairipok Bishnunaha yesterday.

The Sadar Hills District Congress Committee (SH-DCC) has slammed the BJP-led Manipur Government over the alleged bomb attack on Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and former Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee president K Meghachandra Singh, In a statement, the committee termed the incident as an assault not only on an individual but on the democratic and constitutional values of the State.

The SH-DCC condemned the bomb attack and demanded immediate and stringent action against those responsible.

The district Congress body said the attack had assumed grave significance at a time when five Congress MLAs, including the CLP leader, were making efforts both inside and outside the Assembly to raise issues concerning the common people and work towards restoring peace and harmony in Manipur.

"Democracy cannot function under fear and intimidation," the SH-DCC said, accusing the BJP-led government of "complete failure" to maintain law and order and protect citizens and political leaders.

It demanded that the government act immediately against the perpetrators and ensure that such incidents are not repeated.

Strongly condemning the incident, Wangkhem Block Congress Committee (WBCC) urged the authorities concerned to probe the incident and provide befitting punishment as per law to the culprits at the earliest.

Speaking at a press meet held at Wangkhem Block Congress Committee office at Yairipok Bishnunaha today, WBCC vice-president Loitam Rajen said that the residence of the MLA is in a crowded locality and many passes through the gate of the MLA's residence.

He went on to state that a number of people come to meet the MLA on a daily basis and a bomb blast at such a crowded place which is just around 2 metres away from BSF security post is highly condemnable.

Though there have been no casualties, such an act has triggered fear and anxiety among the nearby residents, he said.

Stressing that the State is struggling with a variety of issues including the unfortunate ethnic conflict which has been going on for more than 3 years and the ongoing updation of NRC issue, Rajen termed the bomb blast as really unfortunate.

It may be noted that the MLA is at his quarter owing to the ongoing Assembly session.

Expressing concern over the incident, he appealed to all concerned to clarify publicly regarding the blast so as to ease the public's sentiment and called for peaceful resolutions rather than resorting to such violent acts.

Today's press meet was also attended by WBCC president Haji Keramat Ali, vice-president Sorokhaibam Kunjeshwor, general secretary Konsam Homendro, Wangkhem Block Mahila Congress Committee president K Kunjamani Devi and other party members.

Condemning the blast, All Yairipok Apunba Ima Lup urged the concerned to issue a public clarification within 24 hours and appealed to the law enforcement agencies to probe the matter and identify the culprits.

Meanwhile, a large number of women folk of Wangkhem Assembly Constituency staged a sit-in protest near the residence of Keisham Meghachandra Singh today condemning the bomb blast.

The sit-in protest was organized by All Yairipok Apunba Ima Lup (AYAIL).

Placards which read, 'We condemn bomb blast in crowded residential locality', 'Punish the culprits at the earliest', 'Stop causing fear among the public' and raised similar slogans.

Attending the sit-in protest, AYAIL secretary Kongbam ongbi Matouleibi said that it is really unfortunate that no one has claimed responsibility for the blast till now despite the appeal made yesterday to issue a clarification regarding the blast.

She called upon the authorities concerned to probe the incident and informed that legal aid will be sought as well.

Raising concerns over such acts at such a critical juncture of the State which has been engulfed with a number of major issues, Bishnunaha Youth Federation Yairipok (BYFY) has appealed to the concerned to ensure that such acts are not repeated.

A team led by BYFY president Ananda Laishram visited the MLA's residence today and held a condemnation meet at the club later.

Speaking at the meet, BYFY Joint secretary Bijenkumar Khuman Laikhuram termed yesterday's blast as unfortunate and appealed to those responsible to stop such acts of triggering fear among the public unnecessarily.

Joining in condemning the incident, women's rights activist Sanjita Lisham termed the blast 'an act of cowardice'.

It is worth noting that unknown miscreants launched a bomb attack near the residential gate of Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and MLA of Wangkhem Assembly Constituency Keisham Meghachandra Singh at Yairipok Bishnunaha yesterday at 8.15 pm and the motive of the blast has not been established yet.
