Imphal, September 02 2025:
The Student & Education Affairs Department and the Women & Child Wing of the Tribal Youth Council Manipur (TYCM), Central Headquarters, have lodged a complaint to the Manipur State Commission for Scheduled Tribes (MSCST) on September 1, regarding the occupation of Tribal Girls' Hostel, Old Lambulane by para-military forces.
TYCM urged the MSCST to initiate suo-motu action against the concerned authorities and to issue appropriate directions for their removal and commencement of the hostel's functioning.
As per a release issued by TYCM, on August 28, 2025, the Student & Education Affairs Department and the Women & Child Wing of TYCM, Central Headquarters, inspected the Tribal Girls' Hostel at Old Lambulane, along with media personnel.
During the inspection, it was found that the entire Tribal Girls' Hostel had been occupied by the paramilitary forces, and not a single tribal girl student was staying in the hostel.
The council pointed out that the Tribal Girls' Hostel was constructed and is run by the Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Government of Manipur, and it is the only hostel in Imphal meant for the welfare of tribal girl students of the State.
"If the Tribal Girls' Hostel is occupied by the para-military forces, what is the meaning of constructing the hostel ? .
In such a case, the very purpose of the hostel is meaningless.
This is a total suppression of the rights of the tribal students of Manipur", it added.
The council also highlighted that tribal girl students from far-flung and remote areas are staying in rented houses in Imphal, tirelessly paying rent.
"The parents of these students struggle to support and sponsor their children's education while also struggling to manage their families and sustain their day-to-day livelihood through paddy cultivation", it added.
In this regard, the Student & Education Affairs Department and the Women & Child Wing of the TYCM, had also submitted representations to the Governor, Security Advisor, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary of Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, Commissioner of Home Department, Director General of Police and Director of Tribal Affairs & Hills Department, on September 1 .
