Tangmai Festival celebrated at CCpur

Imphal, August 10 2019: The 2nd Tangmai Festival-2019 was held with much pomp and gaiety at YPA (Young Paite Association) GHQs Hall, Hingtam Lamka, Churachandpur Saturday.

Organised by the Churachandpur Tangmai Festival Committee, the festival was attended by Forest Minister Th Shyamkumar, Agri Minister V Hangkhanlian and T Paukhanlian, Chairman ADC Churachandpur as chief guest, guest of honour and president respectively.

Speaking at the event, Forest Minister Shyamkumar said that he considers festivals for farmers as one of the most important festivals celebrated.

"Farmers work and sweat everyday in all weather to feed mouths of everyone.

They toil under hot sunny and rainy days.

They should be celebrated and encouraged," he said.

Tangmai which translated to cucumber is widely cultivated in Churachandpur.

10,000 organic cucumbers produced by 27 farmers were showcased at the event.

Urging people to stop and avoid consuming tobacco and its products, Shyamkumar advised people to consume organic food, vegetables to lead healthy life and encouraged farmers to grow organic cucumbers more successfully in years to come.

Shyamkumar also sought the efforts of all in organising the next Tangmai (cucumber) Festival at State level with the assistance of Agriculture Minister, Chief Minister and NEC and Centre.

Orange Festival, Pineapple Festival, Kachai Lemon Festival, Sirarakhong Hathei Phanit (Sirarakhong chilli festival) and Tangmai Festival are celebrations that encourage farmers, he said lauding the 27 farmers of the many who produced 10,000 organic cucumbers at the festival.

He advised farmers in the region to register themselves at Horticulture Department to avail the direct benefits of various schemes of Government under MOMA (Manipur Organic Mission Agency) and MIDS (Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture).

Agriculture Minister V Hangkhanlian lauded the farmers for successfully cultivating organic cucumbers in the region.

The Minister recalled the past hurdles farmers faced in selling their produces.

The Government is now implementing many schemes to facilitate farmers.

Development in communication system is also facilitating farmers in selling their produces at markets, he said.

He informed that the Agriculture Department is pursuing a 550 crore project from the Centre to promote co-cultivation of maize and soya bean in the hill areas of the State.

Urging the farmers to adopt organic farming, Hangkhanlian also said that the department is working towards setting up organic fertiliser plant in the State.

Various cultural programmes gave life to the festival.
