State Handloom Expo concludes

The State Handloom Expo (Hathkargha Mela) organised by the Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles, Manipur concluded today at Gandhi Memorial (GM) Hall, Imphal.
The 14 days long expo was conducted under the sponsorship of the Office of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), Ministry of Textile, Government of India.
The closing ceremony was graced by dignitaries, including Th Gunindro Singh, Financial Advisor, Directorate of Handlooms & Textiles, Manipur; Th Basanta Singh, Deputy Director (Handloom), Directorate of Handlooms & Textiles, Manipur; Y Jagyashwori Devi, Deputy Director (Handicraft), Directorate of Handlooms & Textiles, Manipur; and Satya Kumar, Technical Superintendent, Weavers Service Centre, Porompat.
Speaking on the occasion, Th Gunindro advised the local weavers to wisely use the benefits from central schemes to increase production and improve their socio-economic condition.
He asserted that the handloom industry is a deeply ingrained cultural and socioeconomic activity in Manipur, providing significant livelihood opportunities, especially for women who traditionally learn and practice weaving in most households.
"It serves as a primary source of income and sustenance, second only to agriculture in the State", said Th Gunindro while adding that about 2-3 lakh persons are working in the handloom & handicraft sector.
Th Gunindro further advised the weavers and artisans to not focus only on profit and maintain quality of the products to ensure a steady demand & market for these products.
