Production of short live-action film INTERLUDE begins

Imphal, August 25 2025: Production has commenced on acclaimed Manipuri filmmaker Priyakanta Laishram's latest live-action short, INTERLUDE.

According to Manipuri Film Archives, the film went on floors on August 8 in Manipur and is currently in principal photography.

A contemplative and deeply human-centred narrative, INTERLUDE is rooted in the contemporary sociopolitical landscape of the State.

The cast is led by Narmada Shougaijam and Baggee Tonjam, alongside child actor Thingnam Parihanba and a strong supporting ensemble including Rajkumari Sorojini, Ramva Leishangthem, Atom Ramesh, Sushma Kshetrimayum, Biswajit Saikia, Harendra Laishram, among others.

Significantly, INTERLUDE marks Laishram's return solely as a director, without appearing on screen-a creative decision that signals a new chapter in his career.

After years of balancing both acting and directing, he now steps back from performance to devote himself fully to the craft of storytelling.

Set against the backdrop of Manipur's ongoing conflict and the plight of internally displaced communities, the film reflects on human perception across divides of ideology and circumstance.

Speaking about the project, Laishram said, "INTERLUDE subtly echoes the emotional and psychological landscapes shaped by present tensions in the region, while focusing on how individuals perceive 'the other side', filtered through their lived experiences, inherited beliefs, and personal truths".

"Rather than taking a direct political stance, the film sensitively examines fractured human connections and the layered understandings that emerge within conflict", he added.

Written and directed by Priyakanta Laishram, INTERLUDE follows his critically acclaimed feature ONENESS, which earned him the Special Jury Award at the 17th Manipur State Film Awards.

The film is jointly produced by Roushil Singla and Laishram under Priyakanta Productions, marking the banner's 10th cinematic venture.

The technical crew brings together some of Manipur's finest talents, with Wangkhem Tarun (Tarun Wang) as Director of Photography, Caroline Laishram (Label Caroline Laishram) as Costume Designer, and Punil Hiyang as Location Sound Recordist.

The team is further strengthened by Jessica Laishram as First Assistant Director and Keisham Brigesh as First Assistant Cinematographer.
