Imphal, May 16 2026:
The Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union has raised strong objections to the appointment of retired IPS officer Daljit Singh as Vice Chancellor of National Sports University (NSU), alleging that recruitment rules and essential qualifications were bypassed.
In a press release Saturday, MMTU said the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports had issued a notification on December 17, 2024 for the VC post.
A selection committee shortlisted 15 candidates, and physical viva voce was held on May 31, 2025 at NDTL, Delhi, with 14 candidates appearing.
MMTU claimed Daljit Singh was neither in the screening list nor present at the viva voce.
Citing the NSU Act 2018, MMTU stated that the VC must have at least 10 years as professor, administrative experience, and a strong academic research background.
It alleged Singh holds only a BSc LLB and served as DG, BSF and CRPF, lacking required academic credentials.
The Union questioned how the earlier panel and viva voce list were cancelled without a public re-advertisement as mandated by the Act and UGC rules.
"Treating a VC appointment like a political posting is unfortunate", MMTU said, noting Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called NSU Manipur's "sports power house" while passing the NSU Bill in Parliament in 2017 .
MMTU said the development has caused concern in academic and sports circles and urged adherence to integrity and rule of law in such institutions.
