Imphal, September 13 2026:
Ningthoujam Popilal, general secretary of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), has urged the people of Manipur to teach the BJP a befitting lesson in the upcoming State Assembly election to secure the future of the State.
He made the appeal during a felicitation ceremony held for around 200 individuals from Uripok who joined the Congress party.
The event was held at the residence of Congress intending candidate Advocate Laishram Shashibushan at Nagamapal today.
Addressing the function, Popilal said the upcoming State Assembly election would be crucial in deciding the future of Manipur and urged the people to support the Congress party.
Recalling the 2017 Assembly election, he said the Congress had won 28 seats, while the BJP secured 21 seats.
However, he alleged that the BJP later formed the Government through political manoeuvring.
Popilal claimed that the BJP had wooed voters by making false assurances, including making Manipur blockade-free, transforming Imphal into a smart city and making the Imphal-Jiribam road suitable for aircraft landing.
He said the five Congress MLAs had raised issues plaguing Manipur during the recent Assembly session.
Shashibushan said that Manipur is now lagging behind in various aspects, citing the State's law-and-order situation, a struggling economy and rising prices.
He said that he had decided to contest the election to contribute to the restoration of peace and normalcy in Manipur and sought the support of the people.
Other Congress leaders and office bearers also attended the felicitation ceremony.
