Family values crucial to building strong society: Nivedita Bhide

Imphal, September 03 2026: Family values are the foundation of a strong and healthy society, said All India Vivekananda Kendra vice-president and Padma Shri awardee Nivedita Bhide on Thursday.

She was speaking at the inaugural session of a three-day workshop on "Transformation of Family Structure of Contemporary India" at Hotel Imphal, North AOC .

The workshop is jointly organised by Manipur International University (MIU), Ghari and Manipur Branch of Vivekananda Institute of Culture, with support from Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) .

Bhide said the family is the smallest and most fundamental unit of Indian society and a key component of its cultural structure.

Mutual respect among members is essential for harmony, she added.

She noted a new social trend where married couples are choosing to have children later and often opting for a single child.

"The progress of Bharat depends significantly on the strength of its families.

If families remain rooted in strong values and contribute positively to society, Bharat can advance further and realise its potential to become a Vishwaguru", she said.

Cautioning against excessive pursuit of Artha (material wealth) and Kama (sensory desires), she said it creates detachment among family members.

Parents should not merely focus on providing material comforts but should become role models and create a positive environment for overall development of children, she said, adding that for a balanced life, individuals should also cultivate values of Dharma and Moksha.
