National Newborn Week observed at Thoubal

National Newborn Week was observed today at the NHM Conference Hall, CMO Complex, Thoubal, on the theme "Newborn Safety: Every Touch, Every Time, Every Baby" .
The programme was organised by the District Health Society, Thoubal, and was attended by the Chief Medical Officer Thoubal, Dr Y Nokul Singh; District Nodal Officer, Child Health, Dr Kharibam Sundeep Singh; and District Nodal Officer NP-NCD, Dr M Bikramjit Singh, who graced the occasion as chief guest, president and guest of honour.
District Programme Manager, Thoubal, CH Basanta Singh delivered the welcome address and keynote speech, addressing participating officials, MOs in-charge, and staff of the District and Block Management Units.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Kh Sundeep highlighted the importance of initiating breastfeeding immediately after birth, within the first hour-often referred to as the 'golden period' .
He emphasised that the thick yellowish first breast milk, known as colostrum, is nature's elixir and acts as the first vaccine for newborns by boosting immunity and protecting them from infections and illnesses.
He further stressed that during the first six months, infants should be exclusively breastfed, as it provides complete nutrition, supports physical growth and brain development and enhances cognitive abilities.
Dr Y Nokul Singh underlined that regular handwashing, exclusive breastfeeding and timely immunisation play a vital role in preventing various diseases.
He underscored the importance of family support during the first six months to ensure successful breastfeeding.
Dr Nokul also highlighted that emotional encouragement and a positive environment are vital for the health of both mother and child.
He noted that timely breastfeeding benefits mothers as well, reducing the risk of ovarian cancer and excessive weight gain after delivery.
He also urged health workers, including MOs, community health officers and nurses to spread awareness among patients about proper care of newborn babies during the Newborn Week observance.
IEC materials were also distributed on the occasion to enhance public awareness on newborn health and safety.
