Alleged extortionist nabbed

A 46-year old man who is allegedly involved in abduction and extortion cases along NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway) has been arrested by security forces.
Based on an input about the presence of some armed militants in the Kamranga area of Jiribam who were involved in abduction and extortion cases along NH-37, combined team of Jiribam district police and 38 Assam Rifles launched an operation in the said area.
After extensive surveillance and verification, a well coordinated raid was conducted at around 4 pm on June 19, 2025 in the adjoining area of Hill Cross English School located at Kamranga, Jiribam.
During the raid, the team came across a person who matched the description given in the input.
Upon seeing the security personnel, the individual fled towards Jiri River, jumped into the river and tried to swim across the river.
Some security personnel followed him till the middle of the river trying to prevent him from crossing over to Assam.
Meanwhile, some among the combined team boarded a boat which was found nearby and managed to nab the suspect.
During verification, the apprehended person was identified as Gaisinglung Meiringmei alias Ronald (46) s/o Digongthu Meiringmei of Mukti Samjang village, Nungba, Noney district, Gaisinglung Meiringmei revealed that he is an active member of NSCN (Niki Sumi) and he was at Kamranga for extortion from general public on behalf of his organization.
It was also revealed he had a major role in many of the abduction and extortion cases reported along NH-37.Gaisinglung Meiringmei was handed over to Jiribam police station before he was produced before the JMFC Jiribam along with a prayer for police custody remand.
The Court of the JMFC, after hearing the submission of the prosecution and on perusal of the case record, remanded Gaisinglung Meiringmei in police custody till June 25, sources said.
