Thoubal, November 19 2025:
The Meitei Community Joint Coordinating Committee (MCJCC), an apex body comprising 18 club organisations of Haokha, Kiyam, Kiyam Siphai, and Thoubal Khunou, along with its women's wing, has strongly objected to the Government's proposal to hold the Sangai festival, terming it "ill timed" and urging the public to refrain from participating.
Speaking to the media, MCJCC stated that holding such a major festival at a time when internally displaced persons (IDPs) continue to live in relief camps for over two years and seven months is inappropriate.
They highlighted that IDPs are enduring tremendous hardship, with many still without proper housing and left in distress.
The committee pointed out that the IDPs are counting the days in hopes of returning to their original homes, yet the Government has failed to take sincere and positive action toward resolving their plight.
MJCC further remarked that the festival could be held "a hundred times" once peace is restored and IDPs are properly resettled.
Until then, they appealed to the people not to take part in the event, asserting that the current situation is not conducive for celebrations.
