Minister, MLA & volunteers of KEDO reach out to flood victims

CAF & PD Minister Karam Shyam along with Khurai AC MLA L Susindro and members of Kanglei Economic Development Organisation (KEDQ) reached out to the flood victims of Chajing Karam today.
The Minister, MLA and about 100 volunteers of KEDO extended their assistance in repairing and cleaning work of properties, houses etc, which was caused as a result of the recent flood in the State.
Speaking to media persons, Minister Karam Shyam, while lauding the MLA as well as the volunteers of KEDO, said that the initiative of coming and assisting the flood affected victims is a grand gesture.
The Minister further expressed his gratitude to the educated volunteers of KEDO for their decision to help repair the damaged houses caused by overflowing of Imphal river.
Khurai AC MLA, L Susindro stated that incessant rain led to overflow of Imphal river at Chajing Karam which destroyed and carried away several houses, apart from destroying numerous properties.
The volunteers have taken up a noble initiative, he said while expressing his gratitude to the volunteers.
In order to keep Khurai Lamlong Keithel neat and clean under the leadership of KEDO, Susindro assured to sanction a sum of Rs 6 lakh from the MLA local area development fund for a year while stating that KEDO and MLA would sign an agreement also.
Meanwhile, a number of houses at Kongpal Kongkham Leikai reeled under water when the river overflowed at Hata Golapati.
The flood victims who have been staying at a relief camp opened at Kongkham Makha Leikai community Hall are still not able to move out from the relief camp as their houses have been badly damaged.
The MLA assured that a medical camp will be organised for the flood affected victims while urging the authorities concerned to meet the victims in person and provide necessary aid to them.
Due to the non functioning of dam door at Kangla Siphai, many paddy fields have also been flooded which is quite unfortunate, he added.
The overflowing of fisheries farms, as a result of the food, will also be looked into at the earliest, the MLA assured.
He also urged the MR Department to look into the non functional dam doors while assuring that reinforcement work along the river bank from Chairen till Kongba will also start at the earliest.
On the other hand, the breached portion of Imphal River bank at Chajing Karam was repaired after days of exhaustive efforts.
Minister Karam Shyam has conveyed gratitude to all the volunteers who took part in restoring the breached portion.
Around 300 feet long section of the western bank of Imphal River breached at around 10.40 am of June 13 at Chajing Karam.
A large number of people were struggling to repair the breached section since June 14 and they were finally able to repair it this morning.
Minister Karam Shyam who hails from Chajing Karam said this was the third time Imphal River banks breached between Lilong and Samurou.
The first one happened in 1965 and the second in 1997.The water level and volume of Imphal River is much bigger in the downstream of Lilong as it is joined by Iril River there.
As such, it is always a herculean task to repair the river banks every time they get breached, Shyam said.
In the past, breached sections of Imphal River banks could be restored only after water level receded to the normal level.
But this time, the breached section has been successfully repaired even though the water level is still quite high due to relentless collective efforts, he said.
He said that Khurai A/C MLA Leishangthem Susindro (Yaima) not only brought three earth movers and tipper trucks but also stationed himself near the breached section and personally operated an earth mover.
At the initiative of Wangoi AC MLA Oinam Lukhoi, a number of volunteers from Paobitek who are experienced in repairing breached river embankments took active part in restoring the breached section.
Imphal West District Police particularly Singjamei police station OC Inspector N Ingocha too joined the restoration work by halting nights near the breached section, and he was joined by a large number of police recruits who are currently undergoing training at Manipur Police Training College.
Karam Shyam assured all possible assistance to all the people affected by the flood.
In addition to the State Government's assistance, Shyam assured every possible help from his side.
