Imphal, August 17 2025:
The Barak Valley Boat Association (BVBA) has declared a total and indefinite bandh of all motor boat services on Barak River starting today against the arrest of two accused involved in the abduction and killing of three Meitei women and three children from Jiribam district last year.
In a statement, BVBA said that they condemn the arrest of innocent motorboat driver' Thanglienlal Hmar and his brother Lalrosang Hmar, residents of Moinathol in Cachar district, by the NIA.
Even as the NIA had stated that two accused are active conspirators in the heinous crime, the association demanded immediate and unconditional release of the duo.
It claimed that Thanglienlal Hmar is a respected Church leader who earns his living by operating a motorboat on Barak River has no criminal background.
"The arrest of such innocent civilians exposes the bias and undue appeasement of the majority Meitei community in Manipur by Central agencies and the authorities concerned," BVBA charged.
The arrest of Thanglienlal Hmar and Lalrosang Hmar is politically motivated, unjust and unwarranted, said the association.
