MPP VP Manisana shot dead in broad daylight

Imphal, November 13 2013: The Vice-President of Manipur People's Party (MPP) Haobijam Manisana was shot dead by some unknown armed assailants in broad daylight amidst high security at Changangei Ucheckon along Tiddim Airport Road at around 10 am today.

The deceased Manisana (65) orginally hails from Thanga Chingkha, but presently staying at Bishnupur Ward No..1He had contested election to the State legislative three times from Thanga Constituency.

He contested the first election on the ticket of Manipur State Congress Party (MSCP) and the other two elections (the last being in 2012) as the prime candidate of Manipur People's Party (MPP).

He had also served as the Adhyaksha of Bishnupur Zilla Parishad.

He is survived by his wife and two sons.

According to reports culled from different sources, Manisana was coming to MPP head-office near Imphal Pologround for a meeting from his home all alone in his Maruti Alto car bearing registration number MN 01K-8866 at around 9 am today.

He reached Changangei Ucheckon under Lamphel Police Station at around 10 am.

Suddenly, a Bolero jeep followed and began to drive alongside his car.

One of the occupants of the jeep fired six/seven bullets and shot him dead while they were still on the drive.

The spot where Manisana was shot dead lies just outside the campus of Imphal Airport.

There is also a sentry post near the spot.

The assailants boldly shot dead the MPP leader and drove swiftly towards Imphal.

Manisana was found dead with three bullet injuries inside his car at the roadside.

Bullet wounds were found near his armpit, right thigh and left wrist.

Police have recovered six empty cases of 9 mm ammunition from the spot.

Prior to the shooting, Manisana seemed to have noticed the assailants in the Bolero jeep and tried to divert his car from the driving lane.

However, his car escaped from hitting a scooterist.

The scooterist identified as Sarangthem Manglem (55) of Heirangoithong Aheibam Leikai fell into a ditch when the car tried to hit him.

Manglem heard some gun shots but he was not aware of the incident.

When he regained consciousness, Manglem saw the windshield of the car lying scattered at the roadside.

Soon after the incident took place, a team of police officials including ADGP (LO) LM Khaute, IG (LO-I) L Kailun, DIG (Range-I) Clay Khongsai and SP Imphal West K Jayenta rushed to the spot.

Lamphel Police retrieved the dead body and kept at RIMS Mortuary.

Parliamentary Secretary Prithviraj, MLA of Thanga T Mangibabu, MPP President Sovakiran and BJP President came to see the lifeless body of Manisana.

Chaoba lamented the security lapses that led to the assassination of MPP Vice-President Haobijam Manisana.

He charged that the State Government has failed to secure life and properties of people.

Meanwhile, the family members of Manisana and locals of Thanga stormed the Raj Bhavan gate decrying the killing.

Communist Party of India (Marxist), Manipur State Committee and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Manipur Pradesh have also condemned the killing.
