Kangpokpi's Gorkha community stages protest over brutal murder of Pushpa Devi

Kangpokpi, May 09 2026: Anger and grief swept through Kangpokpi district on Saturday as hundreds from the Gorkha community staged a massive peaceful sit-in protest at Kalapahar, demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the brutal murder of 63-year-old Pushpa Devi, whose killing inside her own home in Charhajare has sent shockwaves across the region.

Pushpa Devi, wife of Nakul Poudel, was allegedly murdered on the night of May 3 at her residence under Gamnom Sapermeina police station.

Her blood-soaked body was discovered the next morning by local residents who grew alarmed after finding her unresponsive.

Initial investigations indicate that unidentified assailants may have broken into her home under the cover of darkness, mercilessly attacked the elderly woman, and fled with gold ornaments, cash, and other valuables.

The horrifying nature of the crime has triggered widespread outrage, particularly among the Gorkha community, which turned out in large numbers at Kalapahar to condemn what they described as a "barbaric and inhuman act" .

Holding placards and raising powerful slogans demanding justice, protesters called on law enforcement agencies and the district administration to launch an immediate and uncompromising crackdown to identify and arrest the culprits without delay.

"This was not just a robbery; this was a savage murder of an innocent woman inside her own home.

We will not remain silent until justice is delivered," protesters asserted during the demonstration.

The gathering remained peaceful but emotionally charged, with demonstrators expressing deep frustration over rising insecurity and demanding stronger protection for vulnerable residents, especially women and the elderly.

Community leaders warned that failure to deliver timely justice could severely erode public trust in the administration's ability to ensure safety and uphold the rule of law.

Following post-mortem procedures conducted at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, Pushpa Devi's mortal remains were handed over to her family and her final rites had already been conducted.

The Kalapahar protest has now emerged as a powerful public outcry against violent crime in Kangpokpi, with the Gorkha community making it unequivocally clear that they will continue pressing for justice until every individual involved in the gruesome killing is brought to book under the full force of the law.
