Imphal, February 06 2026:
A meeting of the Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) was held on January 5 at its head office in Imphal.
The meeting, presided over by MEELAL president Waikhom Gojen Meetei, adopted several key resolutions aimed at promoting the Manipuri language and the Meetei Mayek script.
Key resolutions are:
The organisation resolved to urge the Government to establish an institute for the development and promotion of the Manipuri language/Meetei language and Meetei Mayek script at the earliest.
A previous agreement with flex printers and advertisers to use the Meetei Mayek script for two-thirds of the content on signboards, banners, holdings, and advertisements (including Government programs) will be enforced immediately.
MEELAL will coordinate with the AMWJU (All Manipur Working Journalists' Union) and the Editor Guild to increase the prominence and use of the Meetei Mayek script in daily Manipuri language newspapers.
District-level offices of MEELAL are to submit all necessary documentation for formal establishment by February 20, with identity cards to be issued promptly.
Efforts will be made in coordination with the Education Department to ensure that Meetei language textbooks are published in the Meetei Mayek script.
Other initiatives include promoting local language publications, reactivating the Lexicon Committee, and using the script on vehicle number plates.
MEELAL officials will oversee the implementation of these resolutions, and the public is encouraged to support these initiatives to promote the Meitei language.
