Inspection conducted for establishment of second Sainik School in Manipur

An inspection team nominated by the Sainik School Society under the Ministry of Defence, Government of India, on Monday conducted a site inspection of the proposed Sainik School at Yairipok, to be established under the new Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model introduced by the Central Government The inspection team consisted of Hannah Kamei, Deputy Commissioner, Thoubal as the Chairman; Col A Rajiv, AKEC (Education), Principal of Sainik School, Imphal as the Member Secretary.
Other members of the team included Atom Kirankumar Khuman, Principal, JNV, Thoubal; Gurumayum Anita Devi, Additional Director and Dr Elina Soibamcha, Assistant Director, Directorate of Education (Schools).
Speaking on the occasion, Col A Rajiv stated that a second Sainik School in Manipur is much needed to fulfill the aspirations of hundreds of students and parents who wish to be part of the prestigious Sainik School system.
He lauded the initiative of Lt General L Nishikanta Singh and the Yairipok Universal College Society for taking up the effort to establish a New Sainik School at Yairipok under the Public-Private-Partnership(PPP) model.
Deputy Commissioner Hannah Kahmei informed that the Central Government has decided to establish 100 Sainik Schools across the country under the PPP model.
She said that the Yairipok Universal College Society has submitted an application to start a new Sainik School at Yairipok under the Greenfield model of the scheme.
After the field level examination, she added a committee would examine the proposal as per the guidelines set by the Central Government and take a final decision.
She expressed hope that the proposed new Sainik School at Yairipok would immensely benefit the aspirants from Thoubal District and other parts of the State.
Director of Sainik School, Yairipok, Lt General L Nishikanta Singh, the second Lt General of the Indian Army from Manipur, said that the institution is expected to admit students from the 2027-28 academic session.
He express confidence that the establishment of the second Sainik School in Manipur would enable more youths from the State to join the armed forces and contribute to nationbuilding.
He further added that he has also approached the Governor of Manipur for entering into a tripartite agreement and contributing to the infrastructure development of the proposed school at Yairipok.
It may be recalled that in 2022, the Union Finance Minister announced the setting up of 100 Sainik Schools across India on PPP model.
The initiative, conceptualised by the Prime Minister's Office in 2017, aims to establish at least one school in each district of the country to be run on the pattern of existing Sainik schools to inculcate "the ethos of national spirit, indomitable courage, an unfailing commitment to values of respect for country and society and imbibe the importance of physical fitness and embody the national pride".
Under the scheme, up to 40% seats of the total annual intake would be filled by the Central Government and awarded an annual scholarship of rupees forty thousand each.
The balance 60% at the new Sainik School under the PPP Model could be filled from amongst the students studying in Class V at the school after appearing for an entrance examination.
