Imphal, July 03 2025:
The Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), a leading Manipur-based civil society group, has submitted a memorandum to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, urging him to take necessary steps to mitigate flood situation in the State.
In the memorandum submitted on July 1, AIMS informed the Governor about the re-occurrence and intensity of floods in various settlements of the State.
AIMS stated that many areas including Keikon, Nilakuthi, Koirengei, Maibakhul, Mongjam, Heingang, Kontha Achanbingei, Kontha Khabam, Kontha Ahallup, Kairang, Lairikyengbam Leikai and Khurai, have been facing recurring annual floods mainly due to the poor maintenance/management of the river banks, a key infrastructure intended for regulating river flow and keeping out floodwaters from inundating nearby settlements.
Highlighting the extensive damage caused to the houses, agriculture and livelihood of the people, AIMS lamented, "The Government has failed to offer any compensation or relief measures for the affected persons and families who continue to endure these recurring flood-related losses" .
AIMS also appealed to the Governor to conduct regular maintenance, cleaning, and inspection of the river banks to avert further flood risk; Establish and implement a holistic long-term flood management & prevention plan; and Provide adequate compensation and relief packages to help affected residents recover their losses.
"Redressing these grievances is not only essential for the protection of the lives and assets of the residents, but it is also vital for building sustainable development and strength in the flood affected areas of Manipur", said AIMS while expressing hope that the Governor will take timely action to address the longstanding problem.
