"Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" mega tree plantation drive held

In support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's global campaign "Mission LiFE", Forest Department Manipur in collaboration with Rajya Sabha MP & titular king of Manipur Leishemba Sanajaoba, organised a massive tree plantation drive under the theme, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (One Tree for Mother's Name)" at Nongdam Shanglen, Wakha today.
The event, led by Ganesh, DFO/Central Forest Division, aimed to raise awareness about the devastating impacts of deforestation such as frequent landslides and global warming, and emphasize the importance of conservation, said a release issued by DFO Central Forest Division.
Inaugurating the plantation drive, Leishemba Sanajaoba elaborated on the need for collective action to protect the environment.
"As responsible citizens, we must care for these saplings like our mothers, nurturing them to maturity", he said.
The initiative is part of the nationwide effort to plant 80 crore saplings by September 2024 and 140 crore by March 2025, launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, headed by Bhupender Yadav.
The event saw active participation from devotees, students, teachers, local clubs, and residents.
Moreover, Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Imphal, also organised a mega tree plantation drive on the theme, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" today as part of the ongoing Swachhata Hi Seva 2024 campaign at the Mini Football Ground of RIMS.
At the event, Prof G Sunil Kumar Sharma, Director of RIMS, highlighted the institute's commitment towards becoming a plastic-free campus, noting that steps to restrict the use of plastic bottles had already begun last year.
The Director also encouraged everyone to plant trees and take responsibility for preserving Mother Earth, stressing that reducing plastic usage is a critical step toward environmental protection.
The plantation drive saw active participation from various officials, including the Medical Superintendent of RIMS Hospital, Deputy Director (Administration), Sub-Dean (Academics), faculty members, staff, students and housekeeping staff from CRED and MSS, Imphal.
Meanwhile, a Swachhata Health Camp was also organised at Langmeidong Higher Secondary School, Kakching District.
Doctors from multiple departments of RIMS including Medicine, ENT, Eye, Surgery, Urology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, and Dental, provided free medical care to around 150 patients during the camp.
Free medicines were also distributed to the patients.
