Mass tree plantation drive conducted

As part of the observance of 75th Van Mahotsav 2024, the Central Forest Division hosted a highly successful tree plantation event at Langol Reserve Forest, Mantripukhri.
On July 22, 2024, approximately 1000 seedlings were planted by Forest Department officials, staff, and around 80 enthusiastic cadets of NCC of 14 Battalion (Imphal), under the guidance of Divisional Forest Officer Ganesh N.Major Rajkumar of NCC, Range Forest Officer, Sadar East, M Jobid Meitei and BO Koirengel Beat, were also present at the event.
According to a release issued by DFO Central Forest Division, Van Mahotsav, renowned as the "Festival of Forests, was celebrated this year under the theme "Ek Paudha Maa Kee Naam" (A Plant in the Name of Mother).
The event garnered significant participation from NCC Cadets, reflecting a growing dedication, to environmental conservation and green initiatives.
The planted seedlings encompassed a diverse selection of natural species, including Heikru, Usoi, Wang, tolhao, uyung chasen for their ecological significance and nutritional benefits.
This variety aims to promote biodiversity and encourage the cultivation of native species.
In a heartfelt address to the NCC cadets, the DFO emphasized the critical importance of conservation and afforestation efforts for the preservation of forests and the environment at large.
Highlighting forests as the lifeline of the planet, crucial for ecological balance, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation, he underscored the urgent need for proactive conservation measures such as preventing deforestation, combating illegal logging, and promoting sustainable land-use practices.
Afforestation, the process of planting trees and restoring degraded lands, was also stressed as a pivotal strategy to enhance carbon sequestration, create wildlife habitats, and bolster local economies through sustainable forestry.
The DFO also called upon the cadets not only to support these efforts but to lead by example in fostering a lifestyle that respects and nurtures the environment.
Key recommendations included reducing waste, conserving water and energy, advocating for sustainable practices, supporting local initiatives, and promoting environmental education.
Further, the DFO urged the cadets to embrace their roles as future leaders by taking proactive steps towards conservation and afforestation, emphasizing that their actions today will shape the world of tomorrow.
