From Ramayana to Thang-Ta: CMAT productions enthral audience

Imphal, September 20 2026: Three productions supported under the Chief Ministergi Artistshinggi Tengbang (CMAT) scheme of the Art & Culture Department were staged in Imphal on Sunday.

'Achumbana Joy Oi'

staged Harimati Dance and Music Centre, Porompat presented its new production for 2026-27, "Achumbana Joy Oi", at Rupmahal Theatre, BT Road.

Based on an episode from the Ramayana, the 30-minute dance drama was performed by 44 senior and junior artistes of the Centre.

Song, dance composition, costume and choreography were by Naorem Harimati.

Speaking as chief guest, Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar said the message of the production - that truth ultimately triumphs - is highly relevant to the present situation in Manipur.

He appealed to the present and future generations to preserve and promote the State's rich art and culture.

Centre's secretary Naorem Harimati said the Centre was established in 1972 and has completed 54 years.

More than 500 artistes have completed its 3-year course and many are pursuing higher studies at Manipur University, Manipur University of Culture and JNMDA.

Guest of honour Budha Chingtham, Member, Board of Governors, EZCC Kolkata, Ministry of Culture, said Harimati Dance and Music Centre is one of the most renowned centres in the State and has produced many noted artistes.

Its contribution to promotion of art and culture is immense and laudable, he said, adding that although culture gives Manipur its identity in the world, the State is yet to frame and implement a Cultural Policy.

Thang-Ta workshop concludes

In another programme, a 45-day workshop-cum-production on "Huyen Lanthang gi Thangbi" organised by Chainarol Temple, Bamon Kampu Mayai Leikai, Imphal East, concluded today.

JNMDA Director Pukhrambam Bilash, who was chief guest, said Thang-Ta is no longer confined to martial training but has become a profession, a performing art and a means to promote culture.

Earlier practised in every household for defence, it is now taught in schools and up to Master's level in universities, offering career opportunities to students, he added.

Guest of honour Kakchingtabam Sanathoiba Sharma said Thang-Ta has shaped Manipuri society, influencing its customs, philosophy and worldview.

He, however, expressed concern over the dilution of traditional rituals associated with Thang-Ta training.

Chainarol Temple director Sapam Inaobi presided over the function.

Certificates were distributed to gurus and students, followed by a demonstration of the new production "Huyen Lanthang gi Thangbi" .

'Chamarak Hanna Pokningee' staged

As part of its month-long workshop cum production under CMAT 2025-26, Paradise Theatre, Wangkhei staged its play "Chamarak Hanna Pokningee" at the JNMDA Auditorium today.

Written by (L) Khundongbam Brojendro Singh and directed by L Kishworjit Singh, the play was presented before a packed audience.

Joint Director, Art & Culture, Mrinashree Mairembam said the production was supported under CMAT, a financial assistance scheme for theatre and performing arts to encourage and promote artistes.

She informed that application forms for this year's CMAT have been issued and the last date for submission is September 29 .
