Need for invasive species database stressed

Directorate of Environment & Climate Change (DoECC) in collaboration with ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre organised the '3rd Roundtable Discussion on Invasive Alien Species and Climate Change in Manipur', on Tuesday at the Loktak Farmers' Training Hostel of ICAR Manipur Centre.
ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region head Dr Ch Ba-sudha delivered the welcome address, while DoECC director Dr T Brajakumar set the context for the discussion.
Prof Potsangbam Kumar Singh of Manipur International University, Dr Yumnam Lokeshwor Singh of DMU Department of Zoology, and MU assistant professor Dr Rameshwori attended as speakers.
During the discussion, the speakers elaborated on the difference between invasive and alien species, and also stressed the need for timely assessment of habitat vulnerability of both flora and fauna.
They further emphasised the need for compiling a database for alien and invasive species, spreading awareness in local communities and civil societies, a framework for regulations in the form of government policies, and improving biosecurity of endemic species.
