A two-day workshop for the master trainers of the Eco-Clubs that have been set up with the objective of involving school students in protecting the environment has begun from today at State Guest House here.
The workshop is being organised under the aegis of the Manipur Pollution Control Board (MPCB).
The master trainers are the key players in the functioning of the Eco-Clubs that have been set up in the schools under the National Green Corpus Programme of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt of India.
So far, around 150 eco-clubs have been reportedly set up in all the districts of the State.
The movement for eco-club in India was launched in 2001-02.Apart from the objective of spreading knowledge of ecology among the students and providing a platform for them to facilitate discussion on environmental issues, these clubs have been set up to encourage mass participation in environmental protection through the efforts of the students.
In Manipur, the eco-club movement gains momentum since 2003 with MPCB as the nodal agency.
Inauguration of the today's workshop was attended by Chairman of MPCB MLA E Dwijamani Singh as chief guest.
Member Secretary of the Board Th Ibobi and officials of the Centre for Environmental Education (CEE), North East Region Kaushik Saikia and Simonta Kalika also graced the dais of the function.
Prof G Tomba Sharma, Prof H Nandiram Sharma.
Conservator of Forest (Wild Life) K Jagdiswore Singh and CEE officials were among the resource persons who spoke during the workshop.
The workshop is being attended by school teachers and other delegates.
