Imphal, April 05 2026:
Dr Yaikhomba Taorem, Managing Director of Angel Children Hospital, called for an immediate and accurate update of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur to identify illegal immigrants.
He warned that delaying the process might render the NRC ineffective in the future.
Dr Yaikhomba made these remarks today during the flagging off ceremony of a 7-kilometer marathon organised by the youth of Konthoujam Assembly Constituency in Kangmong's Kajao Lampak.
The marathon, themed "Run for Change, Run For Unity", aimed to demand the implementation of the NRC update before any census in Manipur and to ensure protection for the indigenous population.
The run, drawing around 1,000 participants including children, youth, and elders, ended at Konthoujam Bazar, with cash prizes for category winners and consolation awards distributed.
In his address, Dr Yaikhomba stressed the need for NRC implementation before any census to protect indigenous populations.
He cautioned that outsiders might exploit delays to claim citizenship.
"A timely, rule-bound NRC update and census is essential to avoid future problems for the State", Dr Yaikhomba said, urging professionals across sectors to unite for a developed society.
