Tension gripped Moirang on Friday as enraged locals blocked the Imphal-Wangoo road at Moirang Konjengbam Leikai after police allegedly refused to hand over the body of Hemam Romesh alias Itungnao (32) of Moirang Konjengbam Leikai, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident at Kwakta Charangpat on Thursday night.
According to family members, Romesh, along with three friends, met with an accident around 6.30 pm while returning home from work.
While the others sustained injuries and were admitted to hospital, Romesh succumbed to his injuries.
Speaking to the media, Hemam Ongbi Thoibi, sister-in-law of Romesh said her brother had gone out with friends for tile-fitting work.

Unfortunately, on their return, they met with the accident.
While Romesh passed away, his three companions are still under treatment.
She said that family members had urged police to hand over Romesh's body, since his death resulted from an accident.
However, the OC of Phougakchao Ikhai Police Station requested the family to allow the body to be taken to the hospital, with assurances that the post-mortem would not be conducted.
However today morning, when family members visited RIMS morgue to take the body, police allegedly refused to hand over the body without conducting the post-mortem, sparking a heated altercation, said Thoibi Thoibi insisted that the body must be released and handed over to the family members by the OC of Phougakchao Ikhai PS, without post-mortem, warning that any delay would trigger public agitation.
"If disrespected, the people will launch an agitation against the police," she asserted.
Later, a meeting involving MLA of Moirang AC Th Shanti was convened at around 5.30 pm, with the locality and family members.
After the MLA assured that full responsibility would be taken in handing over the body to the family, locals withdrew the road block.
