Mt Everest College launches Orchidarium to preserve fallen indigenous orchids

Senapati, July 21 2025: Mount Everest College marked a notable step towards environmental conservation and campus beautification with the formal launch of its Orchidarium on Monday at the college campus.

The ceremony, attended by the college Principal, faculty members, and students reflected the institution's dedication to sustainability and the preservation of local biodiversity.

The Orchidarium aims to rescue and preserve fallen indigenous orchids, promote awareness about local orchid diversity, and enhance the visual appeal of the campus.

With over 33 species of orchids in its collection, the Orchidarium is a testament to the college's commitment to conservation.

Vice Principal Gonmei Meithuanlungpou, chairman of the Orchidarium, highlighted the initiative's importance, noting that it was taken to rescue orchids from fallen trees due to landslides, road construction, and other natural causes, with a focus on protecting, preserving, and promoting the species in a sustainable manner, rather than plucking or taking them from their natural habitats.

"The IQAC, Botany Department, Eco Club, faculties and students have played a vital role in the Orchidarium's success," he said, adding "This initiative promotes awareness about local orchid diversity and fosters care for our natural heritage" .

A pledge was taken during the ceremony, led by K Kateni, Secretary MECOC, to rescue and protect fallen indigenous orchids from Manipur's hill districts.

The initiative underscored the college's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability.

The Orchidarium will serve as a hub for learning and research, providing students with hands-on experience in orchid conservation and management.
