Imphal, June 21 2025:
In a rare and challenging case, BABINA Hospital successfully treated an 8-year-old boy who had been suffering from a persistent and growing swelling on his right thumb since birth.
As per a release issued by BABINA Hospital, despite multiple hospital visits and years of conservative treatment, the swelling worsened which affected the boy's ability to write and caused pain in his dominant hand.
Alarmed by the rapid increase and discomfort, the child's father brought him to BABINA Hospital, where he was examined by Dr Sidartha Lukram, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon.
Following detailed clinical and imaging evaluations, Dr Sidartha diagnosed the condition as a high-flow arteriovenous (AV) malformation.
"It is a rare and complex vascular anomaly that occurs in only about 1% of the population", he explained.
Given the complexity and critical location of the malformation, the child underwent laser-assisted surgical excision, a technique essential for controlling bleeding during the procedure.
The surgery, performed on June 16 by a specialised microvascular team led by Dr Sidartha, included nerve reconstruction and was completed with minimal blood loss.
The boy recovered well and was discharged the next day with restored hand function.
"We had visited many hospitals and doctors, but my son's condition never improved", said the child's father.
"BABINA Hospital provided better infrastructure, advanced laser technology, and affordable care, all within the state.
We didn't have to go outside Manipur and spend more for treatment", he added.
BABINA Hospital houses a full-fledged Super Speciality Vascular Centre, equipped with state-of-the-art diagnostic and surgical technology.
It offers advanced treatment for conditions such as AV malformations, arterial diseases, varicose veins and aneurysms, reducing the need for patients to seek costly care outside the state.
The case highlighted the hospital's growing role as one of the regional leaders in complex vascular care.
