Imphal, January 18 2026: Enat Y okhat Apun Luplen (Cultural Preservation Centre) observed "Maichou Ningshing Thouram" at Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU), Yaikul Police Lane, Imphal today.

"Maichou Ningshing Thouram" is observed every year to honor and remember traditional scholars (Maichous) and elders who safeguarded Manipuri culture.

The event was graced by dignitaries, including RK Nayansana Devi, former Chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board (MSSWB); S Keshoram Khaba, Manipur State Kala Akademi Awardee and president, MDU; Soibam Surchandra, proprietor, S Tomba & Sons Pengba Farm; and Leishangthem Mangisana, advisor, Cultural Preservation Centre (CRC) .

The event commenced with the offering of floral tributes to the deceased members of CRC, followed by presentation of gifts such as walking sticks, blankets, water bags, etc to the elderly.

The "Tengtoulon (Puya)" was also read out by Meitankeishangbam Meino Meitei, Amai Maichou Luching Purel.

The "Culture Preservation Award 2025-26" was presented to Soibam Surchandra (also known as Father of Pengba) in recognition of his pioneering work in breeding and cultivating the indigenous, near-threatened fish species known as Pengba.

The award, presented every five years by CRC, consists of a shawl, momento, citation and cash reward of Rs 10,000 .
