Computerized traffic signals cause massive traffic jams

Imphal, February 11, 2011:
computerized traffic signals which started functioning at five points in Imphal caused a massive traffic jam suggesting technical unfeasiblily in its application.
The traffic signals were installed as the first phase of computerised traffic system under the centrally sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM).
The signals were installed at Imphal Head Post Office, Raj Bhavan gate, Keishampat, Khoyathong LIC office and North AOC.
There were no defects in the computerized system but at some traffic points, traffic snarls have occured in an unusual manner.
As a result, using of traffic signals in front of Raj Bhavan gate has been stopped as also in the Keishampat junction.
Officials have admitted that the use of computerised traffic signals are not suited to Imphal, an official source suggested.
Traffic police have a hard time to deal with the traffic snarls which are avoidable.
As a result of it, the computerized traffic signal in front of Raj Bhavan has been put off.
The source also observed that another reason for technical unfeasiblity is the close distances between traffic points.
The reason behind the switching off the traffic signal at the Keishampat traffic point was due to a traffic jam caused by a procession of wedding parties.
Traffic police at this point faced a hard time implementing rules.
