Ningol Club, Heirok has welcomed the landmark judgement of the Supreme Court of India delivered on January 31, declaring menstrual hygiene as a fundamental right to life under Article 21 of the Constitution, stating that the ruling is crucial for ensuring gender equality and the right to education.
Expressing happiness over the verdict, Ningol Club General Secretary Moirangthem Inunganbi Chanu said the judgement would significantly uplift many girls who continue to face difficult situations due to lack of access to menstrual hygiene products.
She noted that several young women are unable to afford sanitary pads and often feel ashamed during menstruation, which in many cases discourages them from attending even school and colleges.
She further stated that the Supreme Court had taken into consideration the health risks associated with poor menstrual hygiene, as lack of proper precautions during the menstrual cycle can lead to various illnesses and diseases, thereby necessitating the landmark judgement.
The Ningol Club appealed to the Government of Manipur, particularly the Department of Education (S), to take immediate steps to strictly comply with the Supreme Court's directions within the stipulated threemonth period and to implement effective measures to address the challenges faced by girls across the State.
