Gaan-Ngai festival kicks off with pomp, traditional fervour

Gaan-Ngai, the largest post-harvest festival of the Zeliangrong community, commenced on Thursday with immense traditional fervour and pomp across Manipur.
The five-day festival is celebrated in December or January every year to mark the end of the agricultural season and the beginning of a new year.
The State Level Kabui Gaan-Ngai 2026 celebration was held at Konthoujam Mamang Kabui Khul, under the aegis of the Organising Committee, State Level Kabui Gaan Ngai, 2026.The celebration was graced by dignitaries, including Dr Sapam Ranjan Singh, MLA, Konthoujam AC; Govindas Konthjoujam, MLA, Bishnupur AC; Kh Ibomcha Singh, MLA, Lamlai AC; W Ibohal Singh, Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Manipur; Khuraijam Athouba, convenor, COCOMI; YK Dhiren Singh, president, UCM; S Sanjoy, president, AMUCO; W Chinglemba, president, AMESCO; Maisnam Shivadutta, member secretary, LSTB; Moirangthem Rakesh, general secretary, IPOM; Y Kunjarani, president, AMAWOVA; S Memcha Leima, president, PLMPAM; Mahendra Naorem, convenor, Peace Committee, Wangkhei; H Roshan, president, MSF; Konthouja Joychandra, chairman, Justice Committee, Anglo-Manipur War 1891; Dr K Heera Kabui, president, Kabui Union, Manipur; Pouphunlung Kamson, khullakpa, Konthoujam Kabui Khul; and Kamei Gangmumei, khulbu, Konthoujam Mamang Kabui Khul.
Members of Thoubei, Konthoujam Mamang Kabui Khul, Mou Phan, Pakhang Phan and Leisha Phan also actively participated in the event.
The event was marked by the offering of Holy wine to the Almighty, religious prayers, traditional songs, cultural dance, etc.
The opening dance was presented by MYA while the Kabui Chabon Mahabali Kabui Khul gave the closing dance performance.
The Organising Committee, State Level Kabui Gaan Ngai, 2026 also extended its appreciation to all the dignitaries, cultural troupes, members of Thoubei, Konthoujam Mamang Kabui Khul, and others for their support & cooperation in making the celebration a grand success.
Similarly, Gaan-Ngai was also celebrated with great joy & traditional fervour at Sawombung Duigaipanjang and Sangaiprou Kabui Khul.
The celebrations witnessed the enthusiastic participation of local MLAs, leaders of CSOs, elders of Thoubei, members of Pakhangpham and people of the areas.
Traditional rituals, cultural music and dance and communal feasts were the main highlights of the event.
